NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Ranking 2019 guard RJ Hampton’s final 4 teams
By Chris Kern
1. Memphis Tigers
Penny Hardaway is building something special in Memphis. He had a very successful first season with the Tigers and it’s already paying off in a big way with their 2019 recruiting class and it has put them in a position to potentially land one of the best guards in the nation to pair with the number one recruit in James Wiseman.
The Tigers have the 11th best-recruiting class in the nation according to 247sports which is also the top class in the American Athletic Conference. To go along with Wiseman they also bring in two other top-100 players in DJ Jeffries and Malcolm Dandridge.
Getting a chance to play with the top recruit is exciting, but it takes more than two players to have success no matter how good those players are which we saw last season at Duke with RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson. Memphis has some other players who will contribute next season even though they did lose a large part of their rotation due to graduation.
They have some talent in the backcourt they were just behind more talented players last season. With Tyler Harris, Alex Lomax, and Antwaan Jones returning that gives them a good backcourt group if they’re able to land Hampton. With Harris being 5’9″ and Lomax being 5’10” they’d ideally not have to play big minutes together which is why them being able to land a guard could be key for their success.
Memphis is still in on many other recruits such as Precious Achiuwa and Trendon Watford so they have other opportunities to bring in top talent, but if they want a chance to really bolster their backcourt this is their best chance. They are currently considered the favorite, but all four of these schools have a chance to get him. This recruitment will be interesting to follow over the coming weeks, up until he makes his decision.
