NBA Draft: Ranking the last 25 first overall picks
By Connor Hope
Is anyone entirely sure what to think of John Wall? Depending on who you ask, he is either an incredible point guard worth a max deal or the beneficiary of one of the worst contracts in the NBA. Either way, the Wizards still view him as a top player on their roster.
Entering the NBA after one season with the Kentucky Wildcats, Wall was widely considered one of the fastest players in the league and an elite ball distributor.
Over the first seven season of his career, Wall continued to improve not only his passing, but also his scoring and on-ball defense. However, his career peaked in 2016-17 before he signed an expensive four-year contract extension.
Since he got his new contract, Wall has been on somewhat of a decline in both production and team success. His shooting percentages are down across the board, and he is not assisting or rebounding at the same level. In fact, the only major statistic that has increased are his blocks per game.
Adding insult to injury, Wall ruptured his Achilles tendon this past season. This led to the Wizards finishing with their worst record since 2013.
There is reason to believe that Wall still has the reigns of the Wizards organization and will continued to be leaned on as the leader moving forward.
To make his contract worth the money, however, he will need to return to his prior form and find a way to further improve his scoring efficiency. If he can do that, he will not only recover his reputation, but perhaps lead a respectable Wizards team deep into the playoffs.
Career averages: 19.0 points, 9.2 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 1.7 steals per game
