After averaging just a few points a game as a freshman at Fresno State, Tyler Johnson gradually developed into a quality player each year. He led the Bulldogs as a senior with 15.9 points per game with highly efficient numbers.

It still wasn’t good enough for him to get drafted, but he became a D-League star at the lower level. The Miami Heat gave him a shot in the 2014-15 NBA season, playing 32 total games.

The 6-foot-4 combo guard slowly increased his role until a couple of years ago where he became one of the best sixth men in the league. Johnson averaged a career-high 13.7 points per game in 2016-17, including a 32-point performance against the Sacramento Kings.

Johnson continued to be a constant double-digit scorer for a Heat team who was transitioning after the “Big 3” era came to an end. The former Fresno State star’s emergence helped the Heat remain viable in the Eastern Conference. He was rewarded with a $50 million contract for four years in 2016 (the Brooklyn Nets initially offered it, but Miami matched).

At just 27 years old, Johnson has four years of at least 10+ points per game and his ability to play multiple positions on both sides of the court will keep him in the league for seasons to come.

He was traded to the Phoenix Suns this past season and has one year left on his contract. Assuming the Suns will use him as a trade piece, Johnson may become one of those under the radar moves a postseason contender could benefit from at the deadline next year.

Career stats (270 games): 11.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists per game
