VCU Basketball lands one of the top remaining class of 2019 players in Nah’shon Hyland. How big is this commitment for the Rams?

After 25 total wins and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, VCU Basketball is set to have a big 2019-20 season. They bring back the team’s top six players and are a consensus preseason top-20 projected team. Things got even better for the Rams with the late commitment of Nah’shon Hyland.

A top-100 prospect, Hyland is the top player from the state of Delaware in the 2019 recruiting class. The 6’3 point guard is an explosive scorer who is coming off of a great spring AAU session. That allowed the recruit to receive several high major offers but in the end, Hyland made the decision to choose VCU Basketball for next season.

This would normally be a great pickup for the Rams to get a top-100 player but the need for another ball handler grew after former four-star recruit PJ Byrd decided to transfer this offseason. He was supposed to be the backup point guard for rising senior and leading scorer Marcus Evans. Now Hyland will be the primary reserve for this upcoming season. This shores up the team’s perimeter depth and adds another offensive weapon to a team who was ranked 220th in scoring. He shouldn’t have a negative effect on the defensive end, with his size and athleticism being an asset.

Hyland’s commitment gives the team the top A-10 recruiting class for 2019. He’s the fourth addition, joining three-star prospects Hason Ward and Jarren McAllister, along with guard Tre Clark. These players, along with commitment class of 2020 guard Adrian Baldwin are the future of the program after the group of rising seniors graduate and move on.

Head coach Mike Rhoades should have a very good team for next season. But the goal is to have VCU Basketball not only be at the top of the A-10 regularly, but also make the NCAA Tournament an annual event. With Hyland coming in, the Rams are in good position to do just that.
