Draft stock: First-round pick.
Despite the potential red flags concerning Porter Jr.’s off the court issues and maturity, it doesn’t seem to have affected his draft stock too much. He apparently showed enough in his short time at USC and in the run-up to the draft that he is still being mocked anywhere from just outside the lottery to the early ’20s and unless teams shy away on draft night causing him to fall, this is right about where he should be taken.
The Busting Brackets’ mock draft is one of multiple that has Porter, Jr. landing with the Detroit Pistons at No. 15. The Pistons would be a good spot for Porter because they could use an upgrade in talent in the backcourt that is flush with decent role players but no real stars.
The other team that has landed the young guard in multiple mocks is the Boston Celtics and, with three first round picks and the question marks in their backcourt, it makes sense. With Kyrie Irving being perhaps the biggest question mark in the NBA offseason (non-Anthony Davis division) and Terry Rozier having already made overtures about wanting to be a bigger fish, and that may not be in Boston, the point guard position could be up for the taking.
Kevin Porter Jr. definitely seems like an interesting NBA prospect with an insanely high ceiling. If he is able to realize his fullest potential, then he could be an amazing talent in the next few years.
