With no 1st Round pick in the NBA Draft, the Dallas Mavericks will have to wait to get involved. Who are their best options at No. 37?
When the NBA Draft lottery occurred in May, several teams benefitted big time from the complete overhaul of the odds. The Dallas Mavericks, unfortunately, were not one of those teams. Their pick fell above the top-5, meaning it went to the Atlanta Hawks by virtue of last year’s Trae Young-Luka Doncic trade.
But owner Mark Cuban and the franchise are happy to make the move, with the presumptive Rookie of the Year coming off a season where he averaged 21.2 ppg, 7.8 rpg and 6.0 apg. He’s the new face of the Mavericks, replacing 20-year vet and future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki.
The legendary stretch forward isn’t the only departure from the roster, as Harrison Barnes, DeAndre Jordan, and Dennis Smith Jr. were all traded during the season. 15 different players started a game for Dallas so expect a lot of roster overhaul this offseason. Coming off a 33-49 record, the franchise is a good way from becoming a contender in the Western Conference.
Outside of Doncic, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Kristaps Porzingis, the rest of the rotation spots are up for grabs. That’s why whoever the Mavericks select at No. 37 should feel good about a real opportunity to get minutes as a rookie from the second round.
Free agency and other trades will likely fill out the starter spots but bench depth is important as well. So who will Dallas take in the draft in hopes of finding a diamond in the rough?
