Which players make the most sense for the New York Knicks to select with their No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft as they begin to rebuild their franchise?

With the 2019 NBA Draft less than a week away, there are many mock drafts, big boards and workouts to pay attention to. While the top two players seem to be locked with Zion Williamson and Ja Morant taking the first spots, the Knicks’ decision on what to do with their No. 3 overall pick has led to a large debate.

Assuming the draft pick does not become part of a blockbuster trade package, the Knicks will be selecting a player that they will expect to become a pillar for future success. So which players could make the most sense for the Knicks at No. 3? The answer might be simple.

1. RJ Barrett – Wing, Duke Blue Devils

2018-19 Stats: 22.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists

I realize that Busting Brackets has been releasing lists for each team with at least three potential options for each pick, but the Knicks really have just one. With Williamson and Morant near locks to be drafted first and second, respectively, Barrett becomes a must-pick talent.

Entering last season as the top pick on most mock drafts, Barrett didn’t do anything to lose that spot other than watch Williamson and Morant light up the NCAA in unforgettable fashion. His ability as a pure scorer was nearly unrivaled, as he became one of the top scoring freshmen in NCAA history, and led the Blue Devils in scoring as well.

His size and length will allow him to play positions 2-through-4, and his ability a finish at the rim will make him a tough cover for most wings. On the defensive end, his stature and athleticism allow him to make a difference, even when he gets caught out of position. He is also a willing passer, which will be an asset if the Knicks fill one or both of their max money slots.

Most importantly, perhaps, is Barrett’s desire to play in New York. Not only has he said he is set on playing for the Knicks, but he has also worked out exclusively for the Knicks. When you have a franchise stuck this far in the sewer, any capable player who wants to play there should be welcomed.

Other Options

While Barrett appears to be the only viable option for the Knicks there other scenarios that would create an opportunity for the Knicks to make another selection. If for some unforeseen reason, the Pelicans or Grizzlies select Barrett, leaving Morant or Williamson available, that yet-to-be-drafted player would be an obvious choice.

Williamson is a monster on both ends of the floor, who will sell tons of tickets and help push the Knicks to the next level. Morant would be the perfect point guard to pair with one or two max scorers and could also help build New York into a true contender. However, with that situation seeming nearly impossible, Barrett should be the choice at No. 3.
