NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Ranking the last 10 No. 1 overall prospects
By Joey Loose
1. Anthony Davis – 2011
Without a doubt, Davis completely earned his top ranking for the 2011 class, and the things he accomplished under John Calipari at Kentucky speak for that. The accolades are numerous on a powerful team, with the bottom line being quite clear. The Davis-led Wildcats won the national championship. Everything Davis needed to accomplish was fulfilled in his one season at Kentucky, and the accolades speak for themselves.
The future NBA All-Star put up 14.2 ppg and 10.4 rpg at the college level. He outshined other top ranked recruits like Austin Rivers, Bradley Beal and James Michael McAdoo, all of whom failed to leave the college basketball level with a ring. Davis certainly had help, including 3rd-ranked recruit Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, but his 2012 season goes down as one of college basketball’s best.
The consensus All-American won the Naismith Award, the Wooden Award and was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2012 NCAA Tournament. He was a member of virtually every All-SEC team and led the NCAA in blocks. The top pick of the 2012 NBA Draft has become a star at the professional level.
Davis had one of NCAA Basketball’s most impressive seasons in recent memory and absolutely lived up to his top ranking. There’s no doubt that the Wildcats landed the best player in the Draft, while Kentucky is still hunting for their second title under Calipari.
