NCAA Basketball Recruiting: 5 schools on top of Jabri Abdur-Rahim’s wish list
Top 2020 NCAA Basketball prospect Jabri Abdur-Rahim got a chance to showcase his skill in front of a host of college coaches this past weekend.
Four-star NCAA Basketball recruit Jabri Abdur-Rahim was the center of attention this past weekend at Blair’s Mid-Atlantic Independent shootout in Blairstown, NJ (June 22-23) as a host of high-major schools were there. Adam Zagoria of ZAGSBLOG reported that Virginia’s Tony Bennett, Michigan’s Juwan Howard, and UConn’s Dan Hurley were on hand to watch the 6-6 wing on Saturday. Zagoria added that Notre Dame’s Mike Brey was expected to be in town on Sunday while Kentucky’s assistant Tony Barbee was at Abdur Rahim’s first game on June 22.
Virginia, Michigan, Notre Dame, and UConn have been working hard to show Abdur-Rahim some love and are among the teams pursuing him the hardest. He holds 35 scholarship offers overall with all but Nevada being from a power-seven conference, now that is impressive.
“I think a lot of head coaches were here so they reached out and told me that I’m really important to them,” Abdur-Rahim-Rahim told Zagoria.
Here is a look at each the five schools at the top of his list plus Kentucky.
Virginia: Abdur-Rahim is slated to take an official visit to Charlottesville next week. He said that he is in frequent contact with the Cavaliers. Virginia offered him a scholarship in May. The Cavs already have received verbal commits from two 2020 prospects Reece Beekman and Carson McCorkle. With those two commitments, they are expected to have just one more scholarship available.
UConn: The Huskies were one of the earliest teams in on Abdur-Rahim as they offered him in August 2017. Abdur-Rahim said that Hurley has been in contact with him a lot lately. UConn does not have any commitments from the Class of 2020 season and is expected to have four open roster spots in 2020-21. He is at the top of the Huskies’ small forward wish list.
Michigan: He is expecting to take an official visit to Ann Arbor at some point later this summer. Michigan’s coaching staff has been in on Abdur-Rahim from day one, however, Howard only offered him on June 6. Abdur-Rahim has a previous relationship with assistant coach Howard Eisley through his father former NBA player Shareef Abdur-Rahim. The Wolverines have a commitment from 2020 prospect Zeb Jackson but is expected to have four more scholarships available for next year. Abdur-Rahim is atop of the Wolverines’ small forward wish list.
Notre Dame: Abdur-Rahim says that the Irish have been on him hard and they have seen him play the most. However, Notre Dame just officially offered him in May. The Fighting Irish are expected to six scholarships available for next season and Abdur-Rahim is at the top of their wish list at small forward.
Louisville: The Cardinals are a little late to the party, but they have come after him hard recently. Louisville is expected to have four open spots next year.
Kentucky: The Wildcats have not offered him yet and he said that “would do his homework” on the team. Kentucky is expected to have four scholarships available for next season.
The consensus top 60 recruit said that he has no timetable to make a decision and will take his time. He is ranked as the 46th best prospect in the class by 247Sports Composite and 61st by 247Sports. He is ranked 28th in ESPN rankings and 41st by Rivals.
The Short Hills (NJ) native is rangy and versatile with decent athleticism. He is a scorer who possesses a soft touch and a number of finishing moves at the rim.
Abdur-Rahim was named the 2018-19 New Jersey Player of the Year after averaging 17.7 points, 9.2 caroms, 2.6 assists, and 1.7 blocks.
