Oklahoma State Basketball made a hire for their coaching staff. This move hit close to home for five-star prospect Cade Cunningham.

Head coach Mike Boynton and Oklahoma State has two goals for the upcoming 2019-20 season. The first is to win some games with an improved roster for Big 12 play. But maybe even more important is landing Cade Cunningham, a consensus top-10 overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting class.

The five-star point guard is one of the most coveted players in next year’s class, with programs such as Kansas, Kentucky and Duke vying for his services. But the Cowboys have been the wildcard in his recruitment, going after him from the very beginning and being considered as a team Cunningham has legit interest.

In today’s world of recruiting, there are many ways that programs try to give themselves an edge. A good amount of it is illegal and underhanded and then there are the unconventional methods that are legal… but maybe not the most ethical. Oklahoma State went that route with the hire of Cannen Cunningham.

The Cowboys are bringing in a 26-year old former video assistant who spent last season with Tulane, who finished 4-27 overall. He’s a former college basketball player himself, spending four years at SMU from 2011-2015. The 6’10 big man was a solid role player for the Mustangs, known more for shot blocking.

But the reality is that it’s not his Cunningham’s expertise that the Big 12 school want. It’s the fact that he’s the older brother of Cade. Oklahoma State isn’t the only school where family ties have resulted in jobs for assistants. USC hired Eric Mobley, who’s the father of five-star recruits Isaiah and Evan. And the most famous example was Missouri hiring Michael Porter Sr. away from Washington, which resulted in his sons Michael Porter Jr. and Jontay to join the Tigers.

Is it cheating? Not really, as the head coaches have every right on who is on their coaching staff. And if they happen to have family ties that benefits the program then so be it. But they better be more than just family and are able to do a good job themselves, otherwise all the adults involved will be unemployed sooner than later.

Oklahoma State Basketball had a very down season, going 12-20 overall and finishing second to last in the Big 12 with a 5-13 record. Things are projected to look better next season and with the older Cunningham brother coming aboard, the Cowboys are in great position to land the biggest recuit to ever arrive in Stillwater. And if that happens, then it’ll all be worth it.
