Big East Basketball: Analyzing the top 2019 recruit for each program
Symir Torrence – Marquette Golden Eagles
CG | 6-foot-3 | 170 lbs | No. 70 overall
Originally a 2020 commit, Symir Torrence reclassified to the 2019 class during this spring and he could be a major contributor in the backcourt right away for the Golden Eagles. Ranked as a top-75 player in the class, Torrence is a dynamic combo guard option that dos pretty much everything well when on the court. He can shoot it from distance, attack the basket, create for others at a high level, and boasts multipositional defensive versatility. Because of these skills, he has the potential to be an immediate contributor.
Marquette already has a pair of strong leaders in the backcourt in Markus Howard and Koby McEwen but Torrence could be a solid reserve. Even though the Golden Eagles have depth options in Dexter Akanno and Greg Elliott, they have their respective issues of inexperience/lack of offensive game and injuries. This opens the possibility of Torrence finding major minutes as a freshman before taking on the starring role later in his career.
Earlier in this offseason, many projected that Marquette would be a top-10 team during this coming season. Those takes cooled off following the departure of the Hauser Brothers, but they still have fringe top-25 potential. In order for the team to reach that ceiling, Torrence might need to be impactful as a reserve right away. He is still a redshirt candidate but is also someone that should be able to more than hold his own as a freshman.
