Kentucky Basketball: Can Ashton Hagans become one of Calipari’s best point guards?
Speed and Toughness
Ashton Hagans plays the way Calipari loves his guards to play. He gets up and down the court fast, if he is not finishing the fastbreak he is initiating it with his defense, and he can work his way into the paint with crafty moves. While he is less athletic than De’Aaron Fox, John Wall, and others, he plays a lot like those typical Calipari guards.
While Hagans is on the court it seems as though he never stops moving. He is active on the defensive end, and we will get into that later on. On the offensive end, he is the primary ball-handler and when he is not playing with the ball in his hands, he is trying to lose his defender to set up a mid-range jumper or a shot in close. Hagans is his best while trying to penetrate on defense, and shaking his defender with solid dribble moves.
As Hagans develops and starts to become more consistent taking care of the ball on offense he will really start to bloom. Part of that development also includes a better three-point shot. With the line moving back to international standards, it may be more difficult for Hagans to really show improvement in that area.
