45. #1 North Carolina 88, #16 Iona 73 (Round of 64)

An 8-point first half lead for Iona sent some significant doubt for Tar Heels fans, who watched as their team trailed by 5 at the half. Fortunately, North Carolina figured it out in the second period while Iona’s shooting cooled down, leading to a 15-point win for the 1-seed. Rickey McGill has 26 points (7-9 from 3) for the Gaels, though Iona was outclassed on the boards by the Tar Heels. Cameron Johnson has 21 points for North Carolina while all five starters grabbed at least 6 rebounds. Iona did exactly what they needed to do in the first half, but it’s extremely difficult for any 16-seed (sans UMBC) to carry that momentum into the second half and pull of a shocking upset.

44. #1 Virginia 63, #9 Oklahoma 51 (Round of 32)

After some antics with 16-seeds in their previous two Tourney games, the Cavaliers made quick work of the Sooners, never trailing in the game’s final 30 minutes. They grabbed a 9-point halftime lead and never looked back, shooting and rebounding their way to the Sweet Sixteen. Their defense handled the Sooners while Mamadi Diakite (14 points, 9 rebounds) led the way for the Cavaliers. Even during an off night for Kyle Guy (who missed all 10 of his 3-point attempts), the Cavaliers still found a way to breeze past the Sooners, who struggled mightily in spurts against that defense.

43. #9 Washington 78, #8 Utah State 61 (Round of 64)

The Huskies played a complete game, with strong defense to shut down the talented Aggies from the Mountain West. After falling behind by 12 at the half, Utah State made this a 1-point game, but then the Huskies went on another run to put away the game in the last ten minutes. Utah State didn’t shoot terribly, but the Huskies (58.8% from the 3) were just that much better. Noah Dickerson (20 points, 12 rebounds) and Jaylen Nowell (19 points) helped pace the Huskies to the big win. They forced 21 Aggies turnovers and limited their offense throughout the game.
