NCAA Basketball: 25 greatest buzzer beaters of all time
15. Cardiac Kemba vs. Pittsburgh (2011)
Was this the greatest step-back of all time? Many argue that Kemba Walker set the tone for what devastating step-backs should look like, as he essentially ended Gary McGhee’s career.
Jim Calhoun’s coaching career was winding down, Connecticut was a middle-of-the-pack team in the Big East, finishing the conference campaign with a 9-9 record and the No. 9 seed in the league tourney. The Huskies needed some magic if they were going to get out of March alive and potentially contend for a national title.
With Walker, though, anything was possible.
If it weren’t for his step-back buzzer-beater against Pitt in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals, the Huskies may have never gained enough momentum to piece together an epic run to the national title.
Kemba saved the season with this jumper, which defeated Pitt, led to a Big East Tournament title and then a national championship. This is nothing less than an iconic moment in college basketball history.
