NCAA Basketball: 25 greatest buzzer beaters of all time
25. Northwestern State stuns Iowa (2006)
Iowa came into the 2006 NCAA Tournament with high expectations. They finished the regular season with a 25-8 record and second in the Big Ten behind only Ohio State.
The Hawkeyes earned the No. 3 seed in the tourney against 14th-seeded Northwestern State who, with all due respect, was a nobody in the college basketball world.
This just felt like the season when Steve Alford would finally break through and make it past the second round, but this upset essentially sealed his fate with the Hawkeyes.
Iowa raced out to an 18-4 lead within the first seven minutes of the game, but that was quickly erased by the upset-hungry Demons.
Then, with 10 minutes left, the Hawkeyes built another 14-point lead. It all seemed to be over, but Northwestern State stormed back and pulled within two points with just 14 seconds left.
And then this happened.
Jermaine Wallace broke the hearts of Hawkeye fans everywhere while cementing his legacy with the most clutch shot in school history. Alford can probably attribute his hot seat at Iowa after the season to Wallace’s 3-pointer — well, that and the fact he never made it past the second round.
