NCAA Basketball: 25 greatest buzzer beaters of all time
7. Tyus Edney keeps UCLA’s title hopes alive (1995)
20 years had passed since UCLA last won a national title. Tyus Edney knew the pressure was on to get the job done heading into the 1995 NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed.
The Bruins took care of business against 16-seed Florida International, blowing the doors off the underdog. Missouri stood in the Bruins’ way in the second round, but it looked to be a relatively easy win for UCLA, but it didn’t turn out that way.
Down 74-73 with 4.8 seconds left and 90 feet in front of them, the Bruins had to drive the length of the floor to try to get a good look. The ball was inbounded to Edney who took it coast-to-coast for the game-winning layup as time expired.
If not for this buzzer-beater, UCLA would have never ended their 20-year NCAA title streak. It would still be ongoing, as the Bruins haven’t won a national championship since 1995.
Edney will go down as one of the most memorable players in UCLA history and a true Bruin hero.
