NCAA Basketball: 25 greatest buzzer beaters of all time
6. Tate George shocks Clemson (1990)
All the talk about last-second full-court passes leading to incredible buzzer-beaters in college basketball history leads back to that Christian Laettner miracle against Kentucky. However, one that doesn’t quite get the love it deserves is Connecticut’s Tate George catching a near-90-foot pass and turning around to beat the buzzer with one second left.
George and the Huskies had one second left on the clock, down 70-69 against Clemson with a trip to the Elite Eight to face Duke on the line.
The 31-5 Huskies launched a pass from the baseline with 1.0 showing on the clock, all the way down to the opposite baseline and George caught it over a defender, turned and drilled the jumper with no time left. His calm demeanor with the ball in his hands, knowing that the clock was about to hit 0.0 was the most impressive part.
The pass definitely deserves some credit. It looked like Peyton Manning hitting Marvin Harrison in the corner of the end zone.
UConn’s run ended a round later, as Duke downed the Huskies by a single point and the Blue Devils wound up losing in the national title game.
