NCAA Basketball: 25 greatest buzzer beaters of all time
22. Evan Turner ends basketball version of “The Game” (2010)
Michigan and Ohio State don’t like each other. The Buckeyes and Wolverines have a rivalry dubbed “The Game” each year on the gridiron, but the 2010 version was more exciting on the hardwood.
After losing the first matchup of the 2009-10 NCAA season with Michigan, the Buckeyes got revenge near the end of the year with an 11-point win and they ended up in a three-way tie for the Big Ten regular season title. Ohio State was ranked No. 7 in the nation heading into the conference tourney and the main competition seemed to be Michigan State and Purdue.
But 15-16 Michigan was ready for a fight in the quarterfinal game. The Wolverines held a 68-66 lead over the Buckeyes with just 2.2 seconds left, but Evan Turner wasn’t ready to let his team bow out of the conference tourney early with a disappointing loss.
Michigan didn’t press on the inbounds pass, surprisingly, and allowed Turner to get past half court with no pressure where he launched a long 3-pointer. As it sunk, so did Michigan’s NCAA tourney hopes.
Ohio State would go on to win the Big Ten Tournament and make it to the Sweet 16, which may not have been possible without this shot.
