18. Illinois upsets No. 1 Indiana (2013)

Ah, the glory days of Tom Crean at Indiana. The old Hoosiers coach was known as an excellent recruiter and even had Indiana ranked No. 1 at times throughout his tenure like back in 2013.

Holding on to a 20-2 overall record and 8-1 mark in Big Ten play heading into a big road game against an Illinois team that had struggled in conference play, facing the NCAA Tournament’s bubble, the Hoosiers knew they had to come out strong — and they did just that.

Champaign isn’t the easiest place to play, but Indiana silenced the crowd early on with a 12-point halftime lead, putting up 41 points and looking like a team that would keep its No. 1 ranking and cruise to another big win.

That was not the case.

Illinois fought its way back and tied the game, but the Hoosiers had the ball with a chance to win as time melted off the clock in the final 10 seconds. Victor Oladipo had the ball stripped away and Illinois raced down the floor only to have a layup blocked out of bounds by the turnover culprit himself.

Then, this happened.

Tyler Griffey will be known as an Illinois legend for this bucket and it just looked too easy to be true, but the Indiana defense fell asleep.

Indiana went on to get revenge on Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament but made it only to the Sweet 16 as a 1-seed before losing to Syracuse. Overall, a disappointing season for the Hoosiers.
