Georgetown basketball head coach Patrick Ewing has been an excellent recruiter since taking over. What is he getting in 2020 commit Terrance Williams?

Ever since head coach Patrick Ewing has taken over as the leader of Georgetown basketball, it seems as though the program has been on the rise. Even though the Hoyas are yet to take a monster leap back into the national spotlight, it is clear the coaching staff has done an excellent job on the recruiting trail and the on-the-court success is increasing as well. With regards to the program’s 2020 recruiting class, Coach Ewing is off to a nice start thanks to landing a commitment from local product Terrance Williams.

Ranked as the No. 82 overall player in the class, Williams is an intriguing combo forward with a great mix of size and skill. At 6-foot-7 and 215 pounds, he already boasts a college-ready frame and the ability to make an immediate impact at the next level. While playing for Team Takeover (DC) on the EYBL circuit this summer, Williams was quite impressive and saw his recruitment heat up as a result. Over the course of 18 contests with the team, Williams posted averages of 15.6 points (.541/.360/.681), 5.6 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game.

With regards to Williams’ fit in Georgetown, his all-around skill should make him an immediate contributor in 2020-21. The Hoyas are expected to make another substantial step during this coming season and it seems likely that Williams will be competing for an NCAA Tournament bid during his first season on campus. Considering the likelihood that Coach Ewing will be able to land a top-tier center to place alongside Williams in the near future, Georgetown’s frontcourt could quickly become of the nation’s most dangerous.

According to Rivals’ Corey Evans, Williams had this to say about his commitment:

"“I loved what Georgetown showed me on my official visit. Coach Ewing has been recruiting me since my sophomore year and has been consistent. I felt like I could fit their style of play better than the other options I had and that Coach Ewing can get me to the next level. I also get to stay home, which is another plus.”"

Georgetown had long been seen as one of the favorites in this recruitment but Michigan threw a bit of a wrench into those plans by extending an offer in mid-July. In the end, though, Coach Ewing was able to convince the talented forward to stay home in “The District” over the likes of the Wolverines as well as Notre Dame. Williams is now the first commit in Georgetown’s 2020 class and it will be interesting to see how the program builds around that.

At this point in time, it seems as though the Hoyas are also in solid position for a number of other prospects. Perhaps most notably, the coaching staff seems to be heavily interested in point guard R.J. Davis (No. 85), who posted strong campaigns for NY Renaissance throughout this summer. He is expected to be one of the top lead guard targets for a number of programs over the coming months as there does not seem to be a clear favorite to land his commitment. The Hoyas have also been linked to plenty of other prospects and it will be intriguing to see how their recruiting efforts change now that they have landed a top-100 power forward.

With Terrance Williams in tow, the Georgetown Hoyas have their first commitment from the 2020 class. He is a bruising power forward prospect with the ability to score at all three levels. The potential is there for him to be a dynamic four-year player with the program. Williams should be a consistent performer from Day 1 and will help to take the program back to the top of the Big East rankings.
