Point Guard

Going into the 2020-21 season we know for sure one player will be there and that is Jeremy Roach who is currently the third ranked point guard and 15th ranked player overall in the Class of 2020.

The big question however is whether or not Tre Jones will be there after his sophomore season is all said and done.

Jones’ second year could go one of two ways in my eyes, he could A, have a sophomore season similar to Grayson Allen’s and stay for his junior season just like Allen, or B, have a sophomore season just like Allen and take his chances and leave after two years like Luke Kennard.

I 100% believe that Jones will come into his own in his second year at Duke, without Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish taking all the spotlight, the nation will be put on notice and truly realize just how good the point guard out of Apple Valley, Minnesota is.

Jones was good enough to get drafted after his freshman year, so it truly makes you wonder what he will decide to do after his sophomore season. But in my opinion I think Jones will stay just like Grayson Allen did.

Jones seems to have that same fire that Allen did and that same love for Duke and The Brotherhood and for that reason I believe he will stay. I believe Jones wants to go down as a Duke legend and in order to do so, he will need to stay for more than two seasons.

With that the question then becomes, what do you do with Jeremy Roach? Do you start him at the two or do you give him sixth man minutes at the one? That is a question that will have to be faced once it gets there, but shooting guard is another position where you could see a player from next year’s team stick around.

What I believe the point guard depth chart will look like in 2020-21:

  1. Tre Jones
  2. Jeremy Roach
  3. Jordan Goldwire
  4. Mike Buckmire
  5. Michael Savarino

Of those five only three will see the court with Jones and Roach getting the grand majority of the minutes while Goldwire picks up a couple each game as well.
