The non-conference half of the NCAA Basketball season can be more important than conference play. Which teams have the most daunting early-season set of opponents?

As a die-hard fan of NCAA basketball, my excitement for the sport is not just expressed in March. In fact, part of the reason I pay close attention to the college basketball season from beginning to end is that many of the non-conference games of November and December have an NCAA Tournament feel.

In the non-conference half of the season, talented mid-majors play other great mid-majors. Talented mid-majors also go toe to toe with powerhouse programs, and many potential contenders face off for a slugfest, just like in the NCAA Tournament.

This time of the year is perfect for teams all over to country to pick up signature wins and even make statements for at-large berths if necessary in the future. This could be very helpful for teams in traditional one-bid leagues because great pressure can ultimately be put on the selection committee.

Some teams prefer to coast in November and December, waiting to exert their effort and showcase their skill against their in-conference foes. Others realize the importance of this time of year, so, they are willing to put themselves through a lot to ensure they are experienced and ready later on.

So, let’s now talk about these teams that are pushing themselves to the limit early on this season. Of these 10 teams with the toughest non-conference schedules, some will play in the NCAA Tournament, and others will not be. Nonetheless, they are all doing the right thing by not taking the easy way out.

Now, let’s get on to the top 10 toughest non-conference schedules in America. Best of luck to these teams.
