Best NCAA Basketball programs of all-time: 16. Georgetown basketball

Speaking of an era of dominance, the Hoyas experienced their peak under legendary head coach John Thompson, who led the program from 1972-1999.

Georgetown went to three of their five Final Fours during that time frame, seven of their nine Elite Eight appearances, six of their seven conference tournament titles, and their only national championship in 1984. The Hoyas also made a habit of turning out high-caliber NBA prospects. Hall of Famers Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo, and Allen Iverson all played for Georgetown under Thompson.

They became one of the sport’s signature programs during this time frame, a mark they have struggled to live up to throughout much of the past decade.

The Hoyas regained their footing in the mid-to-late 2000’s under John Thompson III, who guided the program to three Big East titles and another Final Four appearance in 2007. However, that is the last time this program advanced past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. They haven’t even been to the Big Dance since 2015, though that may change this season under Ewing.

In total, Georgetown has 30 NCAA Tournament appearances, 10 Big East titles, and a record seven Big East Tournament titles to go along with those nine Elite Eight and five Final Four appearances. The Hoyas also rank in the top 15 all-time in weeks ranked in the AP poll.
