NCAA Basketball: Ranking the top 25 programs of all time
By Brian Rauf
Best NCAA Basketball programs of all-time: 25. Notre Dame basketball
You probably don’t think of Notre Dame as being a college basketball power – they’re a football school, after all – but this program is much more accomplished than you might realize.
The Fighting Irish have won 1,880 games in their 114 seasons, good for the 8th-most in NCAA history. Their win percentage of .646 ranks 12th most, too. When the AP released their all-time top 25 rankings in 2017, they found themselves ranked No. 18.
Notre Dame is also at the center of one of the most iconic moments in college basketball history – their upset of UCLA in 1974 that ended the Bruins’ 88-game winning streak.
That’s enough to have them considered as one of the top 25 programs ever – but they’re only 25 because they have a few clear and obvious holes in their resume.
The Fighting Irish have never won a national championship since the start of the NCAA Tournament in 1939, have only been to one Final Four (1978), and only have one conference championship of any kind (2015 ACC Tournament).
