Best NCAA Basketball programs of all-time: 3. Duke basketball

Let’s talk about Duke – the team everyone loves to hate. And, if you hate Duke, you probably hate (and hopefully respect) the man pictured above, Mike Krzyzewski. The winningest coach in college basketball history with 1,059 victories, Coach K has elevated the Duke program to the most rarefied place.

Under his leadership, the Blue Devils have won five national championships (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015), made 12 Final Fours, won 12 ACC regular-season titles, and won 15 ACC Tournament titles. All that has been accomplished since 1986!

Of course, Duke had a somewhat successful program before Krzyzewski came into the fold, too. In total, the program has:

  • Won 2,176 games (4th all-time)
  • Won five national titles (4th)
  • Played in 11 national championship games (3rd)
  • Played in 16 Final Fours (4th)
  • Appeared in 43 NCAA Tournaments (5th)
  • One of three teams to be ranked for at least 1,000 weeks

Coach K is a legend and belongs on the Mount Rushmore of college basketball, and almost all of those feats have been accomplished during his 40 years in Durham. But this is a program that has been nationally relevant and making Final Fours since the 1960’s.
