Vanderbilt needs Matthew Murrell

SG | 6-foot-4 | 190 lbs | No. 45 overall

Vanderbilt basketball is ushering in a new era under new head coach Jerry Stackhouse. The former NBA star is bringing high expectations back to the program, especially on the recruiting trail. Even though Coach Stackhouse is yet to roam the sidelines for the program, there is plenty of buzz with regards to potential commits for the future. Most notably, top-50 prospect Matthew Murrell seems to be leaning in the direction of the Commodores.

At this point, Vanderbilt holds all nine crystal ball predictions for Murrell’s future commitment. Now, though, the coaching staff will need to finish this recruitment off and bring the talented shooting guard to Nashville. As a player, Murrell is a well-built shooter with the ability to fill it up from beyond the arc. He brings plenty of size at 6-foot-4 and uses his athleticism+strength to get to the basket at a high rate as well.

Vanderbilt is not the only high-major program involved in this recruiting battle, though. The Commodores need to land a commitment from Murrell but they will have to beat out the likes of fellow SEC programs Florida, Auburn, and Ole Miss as well as Texas. His high-scoring abilities and 3-point prowess will be welcomed at any program.

Murrell represents a potentially outstanding building block for Coach Stackhouse to work with during his first few seasons with the program.
