Ohio State Basketball: Zed Key commits as Buckeyes 2020 class expands
By Neil Adler
The Ohio State basketball team has picked up a pledge from power forward Zed Key, a development that bolsters its 2020 recruiting class.
The Ohio State basketball squad has witnessed a wondrous week for its 2020 class, landing a commitment from power forward Zed Key only a handful of days after shooting guard Eugene Brown decided that he, too, would don a Buckeyes uniform.
The 6-foot-8 Key, who is currently a senior at Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y., is rated as three or four stars depending on the recruiting service. He is presently slotted at No. 117 nationally at Rivals.com, while the 247Sports Composite places Key at No. 158 overall, as well as No. 5 in the state of New York.
According to a review of the primary recruiting Web sites, he held about 30 offers from a wide range of schools, including Cincinnati, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Providence, Southern California and Wisconsin. Key revealed his commitment to head coach Chris Holtmann and Ohio State via his Twitter page.
Per this article on Bucknuts.com, the OSU campus is the only one for which Key took an official visit. Interestingly enough, the story notes that the Buckeyes have just a single scholarship available for their 2020 class, although Ohio State is “able to over-sign by one spot during the early signing period in November.”
On Sept. 16, the 6-foot-6 Brown, a four-star prospect out of Southwest DeKalb High School in Decatur, Ga., said on Twitter that he had committed to the Buckeyes. Stephen Means of cleveland.com reported that Brown selected OSU over Georgia, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Texas A&M.
Rivals.com puts Brown at No. 82 in the class of 2020, and the 247Sports Composite has him at No. 112 across the country in that class. With Brown and Key onboard, at this juncture, Holtmann & Co. possess a 2020 recruiting class that is No. 25 in the nation, and No. 6 in the Big Ten Conference, says the 247Sports Web site.
Key told Bucknuts.com that he has high aspirations for Ohio State. “I think we have the chance to get to the Final Four and win a national championship. We’re going to be really good. You look at the guys who are there and the guys they have coming in. We have some elite talent there and they are working hard to add to it.”
