Houston Baptist Basketball hasn’t had much success in the Southland Conference. Can Ian Dubose lead the Huskies to the top of the league?

The Southland basketball conference traditionally is a one-bid league in terms of the NCAA tournament. Over the last handful of years that bid has gone to one of three teams – New Orleans, Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian. Houston Baptist Basketball joined the Southland after a four-year stint in the now-defunct Great West Conference.

The Huskies have experienced minimal college basketball success. Houston Baptist was a member of the Trans America Athletic Conference in the late ’70s through the late ’80s. After the 1988-1989 season, the Huskies competed at the NAIA level until their reclassification up to the Division 1 ranks beginning in the 2008-09 season. Since that point, the Huskies have been trying to find consistency within their program.

Head Coach Ron Cottrell has been at the helm since the transition back to division 1. In that amount of time, the Huskies have one winning season. However, they have managed to finish in the top half of the Southland three out of the last four seasons. This season the Huskies have most of their scoring back from a team that averaged over 80 points per game a season ago. None was more important to the success of the Huskies than the junior guard Ian DuBose.

The Huskies have a chance to make some noise in a wide-open Southland conference. Coach Cottrell was bitten by the transfer bug two seasons ago when he lost guard David Carraher. Carraher is a prolific scorer and many are going to wonder what could have been if both DuBose and Carraher were on this team to form one of the best duos in the league.
