Led by five-star freshman Anthony Edwards, Georgia basketball has increased expectations for the 2019-20 season. How good will the Bulldogs actually be?

Georgia basketball is not a program that normally has to deal with expectations. It’s a football school first and foremost, and the Bulldogs have never been able to build a consistent winner.

Heck, they’ve rarely been able to build a winner at all.

Georgia has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2015, has not won an NCAA Tournament game since 2002, and hasn’t lost fewer than eight games in a season since 1940 – and there have only been seven seasons since then in which they did not have double-digit losses.

The program hired head coach Tom Cream in 2018 to try to change that, and his recruiting efforts have helped bring some excitement to the program for the 2019-20 season. That excitement can be summed up in two words – Anthony Edwards.

A native of Atlanta and the nation’s No. 2 overall recruit according to the 247sports Composite Rankings, Edwards brings legitimate star power to Athens along with the kind of skill set that could make him the top pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Despite finishing last season with an 11-21 overall record and losing their best player (Nicolas Claxton) from that team, Edwards’ presence has many thinking the Bulldogs can return to the NCAA Tournament this March.
