Butler Basketball Recruiting: 2020 wing Scooby Johnson commits
Butler basketball’s 2020 recruiting class has the potential to be special. Four-star wing Scooby Johnson is now the fourth prospect committed in the class.
Woof! Butler basketball head coach LaVall Jordan has been absolutely outstanding on the recruiting trail over the course of this summer and he recently capped that off with a commitment from Carlos “Scooby” Johnson. The 6-foot-6 prospect is a do-it-all wing with the ability to impact each game in a variety of ways. Johnson is extremely well-rounded and will be a major factor in Butler’s future. He is ranked at No. 137 in the class.
Johnson can create for himself, score at all three levels, find open teammates, and defend at a high level. He can play multiple positions and should be a multi-year starter for the Dawgs. He already boasts a college-ready frame and his game is quite refined for his age. It is very reasonable to believe that Johnson is one of the most underrated prospects in the country by recruiting rankings. Although he might not exhibit one particularly “elite” skill, Scooby does a little bit of everything.
Considering versatility is the name of the game these days, Johnson should be a highly impactful college player. He also should be a great fit in Coach Jordan’s scheme. Johnson runs the floor well, can be a tremendous secondary creator, and stretches the floor as well as finishes above the rim. Although he missed a fair amount of this summer due to injury, he was exceptional in his time on the floor.
This was particularly true at Peach Jam. Across five games at the biggest AAU event of the year, Johnson posted averages of 15.8 points (.508/.375/.622), 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. He simply does it all on the court and showcased his abilities as a 3-point shooter as well. The Family Detroit (MI) featured several highly-rated players such as Jalen Terry and Isaiah Jackson but Scooby was arguably their most impressive at Peach Jam.
I was able to catch up with Johnson to discuss his commitment:
Q: With regards to your decision, what aspects of Butler as a school and basketball program stood out to you?
A: “Just the relationships and the major key roles I see. I could make a difference and help out wherever I can.”
Q: With your commitment, Butler’s 2020 class will likely finish as the most highly-rated in program history. Have you looked into any of the other recruits that you are going to play alongside? What are your thoughts?
A: “I looked at people who were on there and I saw some of the guys that are coming. I think it’s a good fit for me and the other commits would love to play with me.”
Q: What’s the backstory behind being called “Scooby”?
A: “I came out looking like a puppy and I grew up watching Scooby-Doo. I had comforters and action figures, so I’ve been Scooby-Doo ever since.”
Q: When you look forward to your future with the program, what do you want to be known for in a Butler uniform?
A: “I want to be a legend. I want to be known for whatever I need to do to get that W. Playing defense, scoring, and getting rebounds. I want to be known for getting that dub.”
Q: How would you describe your game right now and what are you looking to improve in the next few months?
A: “My game right now is developing. I’m working on being a better wing: shooting, ball handling, and defense.”
With this commitment, Butler’s 2020 recruiting class now features four prospects. The highest-rated of these is Myles Tate (No. 109), a 6-foot combo guard with the ability to simply fill it up. Additionally, Chuck Harris (No. 149) looks poised to be the point guard of the future due to his superb playmaking and high-level defense. Scooby will likely slide alongside those two as an all-around prospect while Myles Wilmoth (No. 290) rounds out the group as a versatile frontcourt option.
Butler’s class is currently ranked at No. 11 in the country. This will change as other programs secure commitments in the near future but it is impossible to overlook how strong the Dawgs have started in this class. This will likely end as Butler’s highest-rated class in the internet era. Coach Jordan still has one scholarship to potentially work with in the group and JaKobe Coles (No. 145) is their only target remaining in the class. If they are unable to land him, Butler will likely hold onto that schollie for a potential transfer after this coming season.

Carlos “Scooby” Johnson is a superb addition to Butler’s 2020 recruiting class. Coach Jordan has done an exceptional job securing talent in this class as the future looks bright in Hinkle Fieldhouse. Watch for Johnson to be an immediate impact player when he joins the program
