Penn State Basketball: 2019-20 season preview for Nittany Lions
Penn State has talent, but they are thin
Stevens and Watkins are guaranteed starter for the Nittany Lions, in fact, those two might end up being the best frontcourt duo in the conference by year’s end. If I had to guess the rest of the starting line up would be made up of three guards, Dread, Brockington and Wheeler, but you could also see Myreon Jones start some games as well.
People surrounding the program are hoping that Dread and Wheeler can take another developmental step forward, giving Chambers some backcourt stability. With both Brockington and Curtis Jones essentially being new to the program, Myreon Jones would be the only other guard returning with experience under Chambers, and he, therefore, could be relied upon as a steadying force if he does come off the bench.
In the frontcourt, the only players on the roster that can match the frames of Watkins and Stevens are the juniors Harrar and Buttrick who are 6-9 243lbs. and 6-8 234lbs. respectively. The only other forwards on the roster are the freshmen, Kelly and Lundy, but both of them play more on the perimeter and senior walk-on Grant Hazle. As of now, the Nittany Lions rotation looks to be about nine deep and any injury to Stevens or Watkins would be devastating.
