Nebraska Basketball: Options after 2020 guard D’Andre Davis decommits
By Erik Mauro
Nebraska Basketball won’t have talented 2020 prospect D’Andre Davis on their roster for the future. Who will the Cornhuskers target to replace him?
When Fred Hoiberg was hired to replace Tim Miles to lead the Nebraska Basketball program, the first thing he did was reaffirm the commitments of the 2020 recruiting class. In-state superstar Donovan Williams solidified his status, as did Indiana native D’Andre Davis. On Sunday night, Hoiberg saw the first casualty of his recruiting efforts, as Davis decided to reopen his recruitment.
This is not uncommon in the world of college sports, especially during coaching changes, as the coach who recruits the player is usually not kept on the new staff. That is the case for Davis, as Michael Lewis was not retained by Hoiberg.
Davis was ranked as the 95th overall recruit for the 2020 class by 247Sports, and the 4th best player in Indiana. His recruitment hasn’t really ever taken off as Nebraska jumped on him early and he committed.
Williams, on the other hand, is ranked as the 103rd best player in the nation, and 2nd in the state of Nebraska. The Huskers are possibly after two guys to fill the now open scholarship for next year.
Frank Anselem
Anselem is listed as a 2021 recruit right now and is rated as a top-60 player in that class, with LSU seen as the front-runner. He visited Lincoln on September 27 for an official visit and was at LSU this past weekend.
Anselem’s offer list includes LSU, Nebraska, Alabama, Arkansas, Final Four participant Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Xavier, and Tennessee among others. If he reclassifies to 2020, this is a name to watch to see if the Huskers can jump in and take him away from the Tigers.
Under Miles, the big thing Nebraska lacked was size underneath. The size they did have just wasn’t athletic enough to keep up with the Big Ten. Anselem has the size and the offer list appears to indicate he has the athletic ability, but it’s hard to say until he actually plays.
Tibet Gorener
A shooting guard who has a lot of length at 6’6, fitting what Hoiberg’s system likes to use, as transfer guards Dalano Banton and Matej Kavas are both 6’8. Yes, a 6’8 guard.
Gorener was born in Turkey but is now playing at Montverde Academy in Florida, and took an official visit to Nebraska on the same weekend as Anselem back on September 27. Many of you may know Montverde as the home of RJ Barrett, D’Angelo Russell, Ben Simmons, and numerous other NBA Draft picks.
Lincoln has been Gorener’s only visit so far, and he has one other offer from UC Santa Barbara. He may just commit now that the scholarship is open.
