The NCAA Basketball preseason AP poll included a few head-scratching rankings. Here are the most overrated and underrated teams in the initial rankings.

The 2019-20 AP preseason NCAA Basketball top 25 poll was released on Monday, and much of the top of the rankings went as expected.

Michigan State topped the rankings coming off last year’s surprising Final Four berth while Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, and Louisville filled out the top five. From there, things were much more muddled. Florida, Maryland, Gonzaga, North Carolina, and Villanova filled out the top 10.

Virginia, the reigning national champions, checked in at No. 11 despite losing their three best players in De’Andre Hunter, Kyle Guy, and Ty Jerome. That rankings may be a bit high for the Cavaliers considering who they lost, but that shows how much (rightful) respect that program has earned under head coach Tony Bennett.

Many of those teams in the top 10 also have a significant weakness that could cause a disappointing season. Kentucky, Duke, and North Carolina are relying on mostly freshmen while Kansas needs a few players to have breakout seasons. Even Michigan State, the preseason No. 1, has significant questions about their lack of size and frontcourt depth.

You can argue that each those teams are overrated, but none of those five appear to be egregious. That can’t be said about some other rankings, as a handful of teams are clearly slotted too high or too low.
