Over the summer the ACC expanded their schedule to 20 games, as a result, North Carolina and Notre Dame square off to begin the season. Here is a look at key storylines for the game.
Move over pumpkin spice, the real love of fall (or at least what should be) is back, another season of college basketball is upon us. One of the significant changes that took place this summer happened in the ACC when the league decided to expand its conference schedule to 20 games, up from 18 last season. That means arguably the most competitive conference in the country will see some early-season league play. That is the case for North Carolina and Notre Dame who face off Wednesday night in Chapel Hill.
Last season the Tar Heels finished 29-7 and reached the Sweet Sixteen where they were upset by Auburn on their way to the Final Four. Their opening night opponents struggled to a 14-19 finish and ended up in the basement of the conference with a record of 3-15, certainly an uncharacteristic season for head coach Mike Brey.
The Fighting Irish are looking to get their 2019-20 season off to a good start and put last year behind them, but North Carolina is looking at a fresh start as well. Roy Williams’ squad has lost its top-five scorers from last season, either to the NBA or graduation. The team’s leading returning scorer is junior forward Garrison Brooks who averaged 7.9 points and 5.6 rebounds last season.
It’s the season opener for both teams and with both teams looking to put their best foot forward, there are plenty of things to keep an eye on for both teams in this contest. Here are some storylines for both teams ahead of Wednesday’s tilt.
