NCAA Basketball Power Rankings: Oregon soars, UK usurps top spot
The opening week of the 2019-20 NCAA basketball season is complete. Which teams were able to impress enough to move up the national power rankings?
After months and months of waiting, the 2019-20 NCAA basketball season has finally arrived. It may have been a long offseason but that only built up the excitement for this new campaign. As many would expect given the nature of college hoops, the opening week was filled with surprising results and some top-tier competition. There are definitely still some needs for tweaks in the opening week schedule moving forward but it is hard to argue with the level of action across the country.
With just about every team in the nation taking the court at least once, fans were able to get a glimpse of what might be to come over the next few months. College basketball, though, is a sport ripe with unpredictability and making assumptions this early in the year will almost always come back to be incorrect later on. Yet, why not take a little snapshot where things stand at this current moment. Throughout this season, I will releasing my weekly top-25 power rankings every Monday with a breakdown of the performances by each team included. Considering this is the first week, there are a few teams that are high in the rankings by virtue of their preseason expectations rather than their play in the opening week. I will explain why I still believe in them, though.
Will these rankings look entirely different by this time next week? Surely, but that doesn’t make this activity any less enjoyable. There are always bound to surprises and will be fun to track the movement of every team throughout the season. Now, without any further ado, let’s jump into the top-25 power rankings with a brief look at my mid-major spotlight team of the week.
