3. Limit the Turnovers
This feels like low-hanging fruit. It’s hanging so low that the average 3-year old could probably grab it. But it is still important to mention. Maryland needs to limit their turnovers against Oakland, and in all games going forwards.
The Terrapins struggles with turnovers last year were well documented and frequently discussed. They lost the ball 437 times last season, good for 206th in the country. That’s pretty bad for such a talented team. But they were young, and with youth comes mistakes.
The Terps started better this year turnover-wise. They only gave up the ball 8 times against Holy Cross. Then, against Rhode Island, they turned it over 17 times. That’s not a great number for turnovers in a home game against the KenPom ranked 89 team.
Once again, learning to take care of the ball in an early game such as this one will help the Terps in the long and short one. Limiting their turnovers will give them more possessions and allow for them to take care of business in a game they should win. Practicing taking care of the ball in this early will be an important development for a final four caliber team.
Overall, Maryland should be able to use their talent and depth to gain another home victory against Oakland. By starting strong, playing the young guys, and limiting their turnovers, they will be able to cruise to victory and build a strong foundation for the games to come.
