NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Georgetown, Minnesota picks up 4-star forwards
Georgetown and Minnesota each picked up a four-star NCAA Basketball forward recently. The Gophers received a commitment from Treyton Thompson while the Hoyas nabbed Jamari Sibley.
Top-100 junior Treyton Thompson verbally committed to the Minnesota Gophers on Nov. 30, according to Evan Daniels of 247Sports. The Minnesota native took an official visit this past Tuesday and connected with the coaching staff.
"“I picked them because it’s home, there isn’t any better feeling than repping your home state. “Also the practice facilities and how everything is right next to each other is just a perfect set up for someone like me trying to get to the next level.”“Awesome coaching staff as well I really connected with them. They could really relate to where I was coming from,” Thompson said. “A lot of them are family loving and outdoor living guys, so I can really relate to them on things that they enjoy.”"
Thompson is the Gophers’ first commitment from the class of 2021. The 6-11 power forward selected Minnesota over Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech. He is listed as the 78th best player in the class by 247Sports Composite and 75th by 247Sports. Meanwhile, Rivals has him ranked 90th in the class.
Coach Richard Pitino still has one scholarship remaining in the class of 2020 after signing four-star recruit Jamal Mashburn Jr. and three-star Matrice Mitchell. The Gophers could use another wing, but they seem to be most interested in guards Jalen Suggs and Kerwin Walton.
Patrick Ewing likely finalizes 2020 recruiting class
Consensus four-star 2020 recruit Jamari Sibley committed to Georgetown on Nov. 29
. Sibley had previously
cut his list down to 10 schools
, including Minnesota, Iowa, and Wake Forest, among others. Sibley spoke to
about his decision to select Georgetown.
"“The program is turning around and the relationships that I built with the coaches and the role for which I can come in and fill on the team really stood out. The visit there brought great vibes and I had the chance to see that I will be able to grow as a man and as a player.”"
Sibley is ranked among the top 90 players in his class by three of the four primary recruiting services. The 6-9 athletic wing is rated No. 86 by ESPN, No. 87 by Rivals and No. 90 by 247Sports Composite. Meanwhile, 247Sports has him at just 126th in their rankings.
The Wisconsin native is long and very skilled as well as a capable shooter. Sibley can score on all three-levels and thrives in the open court. He is also a versatile defender.
Sibley transferred to Oak Hill Academy this summer after winning a state title at Nicolet High School (Glendale, Wisc.), where he averaged 19.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 59% from the floor through just 29% from beyond the arc.
With Sibley now in the fold, coach Patrick Ewing is likely finished with his 2020 recruiting class. Sibley’s commitment currently gives the Hoyas one more scholarship player than they are permitted. Therefore, GU will have to cut ties with someone, whether it is through a transfer or the player going pro. Four-star power forward Terrence Williams and 5-10 point guard Dante Harris.
