Big Ten Basketball power rankings: Michigan, Ohio State climb to the top
By Adam Childs
It has been a great start to the year for Big Ten Basketball highlighted by their Big Ten/ACC Challenge win. But after just over a month of basketball who is the top of the conference?
Big Ten Basketball is proving itself to be the best conference in the country right now. They currently have three teams in the top five of the AP Poll and or very own power rankings also.
The most surprising part of that? Michigan State is not one of those teams. Maryland, Michigan, and Ohio State have a combined record of 27-1 and that one loss was when the Wolverines fell on the road against the number one ranked Louisville Cardinals.
The Big Ten won the Big Ten/ACC Challenge 8-6 and had some dominating performances along the way. None more impressive than Purdue running Virginia out of the gym 69-40. Ohio State also did a number on North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Penn State blew out Syracuse.
Even Northwestern is showing signs of life at the bottom of the Big Ten and Rutgers gave Michigan State all they wanted in East Lansing.
Speaking of the Spartans, they have three losses already but two of them are to Duke and Kentucky. They will right the ship but right now they definitely look vulnerable.
Luka Garza looks like the best player in the conference after dropping 44 against Michigan, but only one other person scores more than ten in their loss.
Indiana came back down to earth at Wisconsin but still sits at 8-1 on the year and Illinois looks at times like they are ready to make the tournament, but blowing a 15 point lead against Maryland still brings on doubts.
Its been a very good first month and half of basketball for the Big Ten, well outside of Nebraska. So what teams sit at the top of the conference rankings and which have a lot of work still to do? We take a look right here and explain why.
