Mid-Major NET Rankings Update

The first NET Rankings of the 2019-20 college basketball season debuted on Monday, and there was a lot to take away from them. Once again, the NET seems to be a beneficial tool for mid-majors trying to prove their resume on a national level.

If you include the A10 (which I normally don’t for this column, but people generally do for ranking discussions), the first rankings featured 33 mid-major squads in the top-100, six in the top-25 (three of which were A10 schools), and an astounding three in the top-10.

Two of the top-10 weren’t surprising. Gonzaga at six and Dayton at 10 would not have been shocking for someone to see if they viewed this before the season started. But San Diego State all the way up at three, only behind Ohio State and Kansas, is certainly a surprise. But, the Aztecs are 10-0 with two Q1 wins. Utah State, sitting at 47th, was the much more likely Mountain West candidate to be sitting that high.

Other mid-majors in the top-25 include Liberty at 19 (still unbeaten), Duquesne at 20 (also still unbeaten), and Richmond at 22. The A10 conference season is going to be fascinating. With eight of the top 101 teams, it will be like last year’s SoCon schedule on steroids.
