Saint Mary’s Basketball: 2019-20 keys to matchup against Arizona State
3. Shut down Remy Martin
Remy Martin will have a target on his back in most games. The point guard is leading the Sun Devils in scoring at 20.3 ppg. The next highest on the team is White at 12.7 ppg and senior 6’5 wing, Rob Edwards, at 11.5 ppg.
Controlling the tempo will go a long way toward controlling Martin. However, his quickness and penetration can still do damage in the half-court set.
Saint Mary’s defense will not only have shut down Martin’s attacks to the hoop, but the Gaels must also defend his passing lanes. There, Martin could have 6’3 junior Alonzo Verge Jr. in his sights.
The Gaels will need to be aware of Verge. He is only averaging 9.6 ppg in 23.9 minutes. The junior college transfer missed three games earlier this season due to a sprained right wrist. He has worked his way back to averaging 17.5 ppg in his last two games, shooting 64.7% on his two-point field goals. Verge could become a legitimate threat if he gets back his three-point touch.
If the Gaels can slow down Martin and the Sun Devils on the defensive end, then work for the good shot either from the beyond the arc or inside to Fitts, Saint Mary ’s should be able to take this game and give the West Coast Conference yet another victory over the Pac-12.
