Big East Basketball Power Rankings: Creighton, Georgetown emerging
Another week of Big East basketball is complete and the middle of the league is still a jumbled mess. Where does each stand in the rankings this week?
Big East basketball entered this season with extremely high expectations as possibly the deepest league in the entire country. Through the opening weeks of the season, it appeared as though the conference was definitely going to fall short of that bar but almost every team has turned on the jets over their past few games. Even though Providence is struggling mightily, the league still features eight (dare I say nine?) teams that should compete for NCAA Tournament bids this season. The Big East might not feature a true national title contender right now, but the depth is notable.
During the past couple of weeks, Creighton and Georgetown have been the two most impressive squads for me. Both teams have dealt with their fair share of adversity through the opening weeks and have come out looking like a better team. For the Bluejays, improved defense is at the core of their recent successes while the Hoyas are looking improved following the departure of several players to transfer. Considering how tightly-packed the Big East is in the middle right now, both of these teams experienced major jumps in the weekly power rankings.
Based on the play of the teams in the conference so far, it feels as though three tiers are emerging. With Butler and Villanova at the top, that tier appears to be relatively set right now with the following six teams all contending to reach that level in the near future. Those six in the middle are all extremely close in national rankings and could essentially be ordered in any way and I could understand the argument. The league’s bottom-tier then includes St. John’s (who might move up a tier soon – I’m hopeful) and Providence.
Without any further introduction, though, let’s dive into this week’s edition of the Big East Power Rankings.
