Big East Basketball Power Rankings: Creighton, Georgetown emerging
Marquette has quietly put together a relatively strong resume through the first month and a half of this season. Of course, their performance against Wisconsin still looks awful but that is the only major blip for the team. Outside of that loss, the Golden Eagles hold four KenPom top-100 wins, including a really nice resume-building win over Purdue, and their neutral-site loss to Maryland isn’t worth panicking about.
It is also important to mention that the team appears to have turned a corner during its current three-game winning streak. Most notably, this is due to the fact that a secondary scorer is emerging.
Senior guard Sacar Anim has clearly taken his game to the next level during the past couple of weeks while emerging as a legitimate scoring option for the team. He was already well-known as an extremely hard-worker and strong defender but is now showing a more aggressive nature on the offensive end of the floor.
The need for a secondary scorer next to Markus Howard was obvious after the first few weeks and Anim is answering the call. He is averaging 17.8 points per game over Marquette’s last four contests and should continue to be a featured piece of the offense. If Anim is going to be a legitimate 13+ points per game scorer next to Howard, then that makes Marquette a far more dangerous team.
With those two leading the way offensively and Theo John anchoring Marquette’s underrated defense, this team could compete near the top of the Big East this season. The Golden Eagles remain wildly inconsistent right now but are showing signs of improvement.
