Duke Basketball: Jordan Goldwire shows out without Tre Jones vs. Wofford
Jordan Goldwire got his second start of the season on Thursday night, this time however it was because the Blue Devils were without a star point guard, Tre Jones.
Tre Jones missed Thursday night’s game against Wofford due to what Duke described as a ‘mild foot sprain.’ Jones is currently listed as day-to-day but with the next game not being until December 28th, one would expect him to be back by then.
After the game Coach K said “If this was an ACC game Tre would have played, he’s got a real slight sprain and it’s better with this break to get well. He’ll be back and he will play right away.”
It was because of this that Jordan Goldwire got his second start of the season. In his first start this year Goldwire played only 13 minutes but was a major factor on the defensive end and was part of the reason Kansas turned the ball over 28 times.
Against Michigan State, Goldwire also got some significant time as he played 24 minutes but once again he was not a major factor on offense as he had only three points. His season-high leading up to Thursday was 10 which he put up in 30 minutes to go along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals against Virginia Tech.
On Thursday Goldwire played well once again as he went for eight points in a little over 27 minutes against the Wofford Terriers. Goldwire was a perfect 3-3 from the field to go with his three rebounds, five assists and also a steal.
Here is what Goldwire had to say after the game:
"“Obviously playing without Tre is a blow to the team, but I thought we all stepped up as a team on both ends of the floor, Joey was huge, Vernon had a big game and overall it was just a good team win.”"
Goldwire proved once again on Thursday night that he is more than capable of playing key minutes for the Blue Devils down the road as he is a defensive master and lately his offense has been impressive as well.
Goldwire took nothing but smart shots against Wofford and he also did a great job of distributing the ball. Goldwire didn’t turn the ball over a single time and he always seemed to find the open man on the offensive end.
If Goldwire plays like this going forward you should fully expect to see a backcourt of Goldwire and Tre Jones in the future which would be deadly on defense and also very impressive on offense.
