2. Has VCU performed above or below expectations?

VCU has performed below expectations so far. It’s not that they haven’t been a good team, I just thought they’d be an excellent team. They’re winning the easy ones and a couple of the tough ones, but if you had asked me in the preseason, I would have thought that they’d take at least one of the games against Purdue and Tennessee.

Below. This was the first year since Shaka Smart left that the Rams were ranked in the AP top 25. This was a fairly lofty expectation to start the year for Mike Rhoades’ team but they probably haven’t even reached slightly more conservative expectations. At 10-3, VCU hasn’t had any bad losses, but their best win yet is over LSU, who was ranked 23rd at the time but has since completely dropped out of the AP poll. With a quality A-10 conference schedule ahead, VCU has plenty of time to climb back into the top 25 and meet or exceed their preseason expectations
Miller
I can’t help but think VCU should be doing what Dayton has done in terms of early-season success. However, VCU still has seemingly put itself in a position to win the A-10 or finish as one of the top few teams. All In all I’ll say the Rams have performed below expectations so far but just barely. No bad losses to this point and beating LSU could have merit come March.

VCU has underperformed so far this season. When the Rams entered into this season as the favorite in the A10 and one of the top mid-major teams in the country even being ranked, most people expected them to be the team to beat. Instead, what we got was VCU losing to quality opponents that will most likely make the tournament, sure these losses aren’t bad and they were close but these were games that they should’ve won which have caused them to drop out of the rankings and destroy the preseason hype that they had.
To add insult to injury, the fellow A10 Dayton Flyers became one of if not the top mid-major program, effectively stealing all of the spotlight that was originally on VCU. VCU started the season as the A10 team, now they’re just second fiddle to Dayton.
