3. Baylor is in the driver’s seat for the two biggest regular-season prizes

With this week’s road wins over both Kansas and Texas Tech, Baylor is now tied for 1st place in the Big 12 standings with TCU at 3-0. There’s a big difference in the conference strength of schedule, with the Horned Frogs having played the worst teams in the league so far. Meanwhile, the Bears already have taken care of the two of the toughest road environments in the Big 12, with both the Jayhawks and Red Raiders having to return to Waco.

The regular-season title is Baylor’s to lose and so is one of the four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Before this weekend, the Bears were given a one seed in the South Region according to our latest Bracketology. Now with the Kansas win, joined by victories over Texas Tech, Villanova, Arizona and Butler, cement their position at the top line. As long as they simply avoid bad losses to teams such as Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Kansas State (who aren’t really bad by the way), the Bears are going to be right there in discussion for a one seed.

And even if they have to compete with Kansas (who was a No. 1 seed before the loss), Baylor currently has the tiebreaker with the head-to-head win. They’ll have the opportunity for a convincing season sweep of the Jayhawks at home on February 22, which could all but guarantee both a Big 12 title and the South Region No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
