Atlantic 10 Basketball power rankings: Dayton, Duquesne and VCU on top
Dayton has been the dominant team in the 2019-20 Atlantic 10 Basketball season. How are the other teams also faring a few games into conference play?
In the preseason conversations regarding Atlantic 10 Basketball, there were three teams that were viewed as a cut above the others – VCU (preseason favorite to win the league), Dayton and Davidson. Like most predictions before the season starts, things didn’t go as planned.
The Flyers have been fantastic, ranked in the top-15 nationally with a 15-2 overall record. The Rams have solid overall but not necessarily at the level expected. Far as the Wildcats go, it’s been nothing sort of a disaster compared to expectations.
But the A-10 is more than those three programs. There are 11 other programs having very different kinds of seasons currently. In the non-conference, both Duquesne and George Mason nearly went unbeaten, while teams such as Richmond, Rhode Island and Saint Louis got some quality resume victories. Even La Salle and UMass did some nice things before conference play.
But now it’s the beginning stages of league action, with the Atlantic 10 in position to get multiple bids for the NCAA Tournament, possibly 3-4 depending on how things go. But the middle and bottom-tier teams are already playing spoiler, looking to avoid the last four spots in the standings and having to play in the first round of the conference tournament.
With 4-5 conference games completed before the weekend matchups get going, there are clear tiers in the Atlantic 10. Here’s a look at where all 14 programs currently stand at the moment.
