San Diego State Basketball improved their record to 21-0 on Sunday but now must go on the road against a frustrating foe on Wednesday to protect that 0.

That Sunday win featured an impressive defensive performance where San Diego State Basketball held UNLV without a made basket for over seven minutes down the stretch to completely take control of the game and eliminate any thoughts of an upset. The win also saw them overcome yet another of the few available hurdles they needed to clear to finish this undefeated season.

Adding UNLV to a list of teams who have fallen on their home court against SDSU that already included Utah State, Colorado State, and Fresno State. Now they only have a couple of teams left to travel to who have been identified as potential spoilers for this season. One of those is this Wednesday’s opponent, the New Mexico Lobos.

The Lobos were one of the teams being picked as a potential surprise winner of the conference at the beginning of the season and even more so by the middle of December. Unfortunately, things have really fallen apart lately. The dismissal of Carlton Bragg, suspension of JJ Caldwell, and injuries to Jaquan Lyle and Vance Jackson have made this team a completely different one than the squad that entered 2020 with a 13-2 record. Since then, they have been miserable on the road, losing to lowly San Jose State and getting crushed by UNLV, Colorado State, and Nevada. This weekend’s loss to Nevada saw the Lobos drop into a 4-way tie for 4th place in the conference and has many seriously doubting that they are the team to finally end SDSU’s run.

These two teams, who have the 1st and 2nd most Mountain West regular season and conference tournament championships, will go head-to-head on Wednesday night at The Pit in Albuquerque with a lot on the line. For San Diego State, it’s their undefeated record and huge lead at the top of the Mountain West. For New Mexico, it’s a 3-game home winning streak against the Aztecs and a chance at a Round 1 bye in the MWC tournament. This will not be a game you want to miss on Wednesday night.
