Butler basketball played a sensational second-half to record a strong comeback victory on the road over Georgetown. What were the biggest takeaways?
Despite playing without starting point guard Aaron Thompson for the second consecutive game, Butler basketball was recently able to pull out a tough road victory over Georgetown. Of course, coming away with the victory was never easy as the Dawgs trailed by 11 points in the second half but they returned to their usual high level of play over the final 20 minutes of action to pull it off.
Sean McDermott, most notably, appears to have escaped his slump. The senior sharpshooter held the Dawgs together in the first half with a trio of trifectas and then buried home four more in the second half to push Butler in front. His most important 3-pointer came in the final minute to put the Dawgs by three and then the team’s defense sealed the deal.
McDermott finished the game with 25 points and was joined in double-figures by Kamar Baldwin (13 points, 6 assists).
Georgetown’s offense was largely held in check during this game and Butler’s defense deserves a ton of credit for that. Star players Omer Yurtseven and Mac McClung, most notably, were held to 26 combined points on just 8-for-30 shooting from the floor. Jagan Mosely and Qudus Wahab also scored in double-figures while Jahvon Blair connected on a pair of huge 3-pointers.
In the end, Butler was able to leave the nation’s capital with a big-time road win to move to 17-4 (5-3 BE) on the season with four of its next five games at home. Before diving into discussions of the future, though, let’s break down this victory over the Hoyas a bit further with my key takeaways.
