2. Josh Sharkey | Samford | G | Senior |

If you are an NCAA Basketball fan that does not watch beyond the power conferences, then chances are you have not heard of Samford’s Josh Sharkey. Well, that is too bad given that he has the best stat-sheet of every guard in the country.

Back in September, I ranked the top players in the SoCon. I knew Sharkey was very talented, so due to his All-SoCon Second Team achievement last season, I ranked him as the 5th best player in the league. Now that he is putting up some of the best numbers in college basketball, I realize that he is much better than that.

In a conference where the backcourt talent of UNCG, ETSU, Furman, and Wofford tend to receive all of the hype, it has been Sharkey, the 5’10 guard from Samford, that has proven to be the best in the SoCon.

Every aspect of his game has improved this season. He averages 18.6 ppg while shooting 47% from the field and 38.4% from beyond the arc. His quickness and toughness give him the opportunity to dribble-drive effectively, as well as create separation in order to put up a great shot. Sharkey is also a brilliant passer. His great court vision and basketball mind have allowed him to average 7.6 assists per game, the 4th highest average in the country.

His contributions do not end on offense. Once again, his speed, along with a feisty demeanor allow him to be one of the toughest defenders around despite his size. He ranks 4th in the country in steals, notching 2.9 per game.

You may not have heard his name before, but now you have. Josh Sharkey can do it all for the Samford Bulldogs and he will continue to turn heads the rest of the season because of the way he plays the game.
