NCAA Basketball: Obi Toppin leads in national POY power rankings
By Brian Rauf
Following an up-and-down week for many of NCAA Basketball’s National Player of the Year candidates, a new leader has emerged from the pack.
Last week, we cut NCAA Basketball’s National Player of the Year race down to four. Those same four players are still the only ones we view as serious contenders going into the second week of February, but that doesn’t mean other players aren’t threatening to get back into the mix.
San Diego State guard Malachi Flynn’s case continues to get stronger as the Aztecs keep winning. He leads them in points, assists, and steals, proving to be invaluable on offense while leading their ferocious defensive attack.
Marquette’s Markus Howard remains in the mix with his impressive scoring outputs (he currently leads the country in that category), while others like Duke’s Vernon Carey Jr. and Louisville’s Jordan Nwora have re-emerged with the resurgence of both the Blue Devils and Cardinals, respectively.
Those players are capitalizing at the right time, as the door back into the race has been opened a bit thanks to some relatively poor performances by three of our top four contenders this week. That has also created some shakeups in our rankings. There is a new player atop the leaderboard now, and the previous leader tumbled a few spots.
So, how does the race currently shakeout among the four most serious contenders? Find out how they stack up in our latest National Player of the Year Power Rankings.
